Zoe's 1st Birthday Party!

Our sweet pea here turned 1 on 2nd April and we held a birthday party for her on Easter Sunday. Initially, it was supposed to be a small party, with just our family from both sides and a few friends who have been loving Zoe the past year. But then, as we got down to the invitation list, we realized that there are a lot of people who have been part of Zoe's life in the past year - they buy her gifts when they are overseas or for no other reason, they literally run to us when they see Zoe in our arms, always leaving all the "so cute, so adorable, can't wait to see her" comments on my Instagram whenever I post her photos, and they post Zoe's photos on their Instagram account when they manage to snap a shot of her. So, how can we not invite these people?! So the list grew very long.... And we had to have two sessions for the birthday party - an afternoon session for our friends and an evening session for both our families and relatives.

It was a very long day, especially for Zoe, but we had so much fun celebrating this amazing life that God has gifted us with. So, here are the photos that I have painstakingly chosen and edited out of the 800+ photos that our photographer taken. Enjoy!

Of the entire birthday party preparations, the dessert table was the one that took up most of my time. I have always love how pretty dessert tables look and having experiences of putting it up at my own wedding and also Zoe's baby shower last year, I definitely have to do it again for her birthday party. This time round putting the dessert table together was a bit stressful for because I didn't really have any help except during the set up, and I had to spend a few nights sourcing for inspirations online and folding the string of paper pompoms that you see above.

While preparing for the party, keeping to the budget was one of the things that I constantly remind myself. So, for the dessert table, I kept the treats on the desserts really simple with just mini pretzels and Oreo cookies that I can get from the supermarket, caramel popcorn from Garrett's, mini cupcakes from Twelve Cupcakes and additional tea cakes and mini profiteroles from the catering. No fanciful cake pops or customized cupcakes that will blow the budget.

And of course, to make it all pretty, my friend and I brought out our collection of plates and cupcake stand. I kind of have a hobby of collecting pretty plates from everywhere, and walking into a store filled with plates just makes me really really happy. There was even one Valentine's day where I told my husband he can just get me a pretty plate and that will be enough to make my day very special. Anyway,  this friend of mine is also in the renting business of dessert table plating like cake stand, cupcake stand and dessert trays, so if you need these you can browse her Carousell page here

The birthday cake was a little headache for me. If you read my previous few entries, you would know that I actually attempted to bake her birthday cake. But after 3 attempts, and with the fridge full from the cakes that we could hardly finish, I decided to strike this idea off and went ahead to place an order instead. Like what I said, I have a budget to work with, so I was definitely not going to spend a bomb on a two-tiered fondant cake. Hence, I ordered a completely plain white cream-based cake for each of the two party sessions (both cakes only cost me slightly above $100 in total), and decorated it on my own. It turned out just the way I wanted it to be - clean and minimalistic!

And, here are some photos from the party in action!

We had practiced singing the birthday song with Zoe for a week prior to the party and she gets excited when she hears the song and would start clapping to it. And, being rather ambitious we also got her to practice blowing the candle and she did try blowing the candle that day but too lightly to blow the candle out. And... guess what, that night she woke up in the middle of the night at 230am overstimulated and crying the house down and started blowing into the air till 5am. "-_- My MIL bought her a whistle the next day and as I type this she is blowing it right now like a pro.

And below are some group photos that we have taken. Pardon me, if you do not see your face in this entry as there are just too many to post! We are so thankful to everyone who came and showered Zoe with so so so many presents and love gifts that we had to used a trolley to load it up to my FIL's lorry that day!

Below are the photos of the evening session where we hosted our families, family friends and relatives. As she is the first and only grandchild of both our families, she gets a lot of attention and love from them and the relatives. We are so thankful that they came to celebrate with us and had showered her with so much love all year round.

The party would not be possible without the help of my in-laws. My MIL took care of Zoe throughout the party while I was busying setting up the place and tearing down the place. She kept track of her feeding time, fed her promptly, bathed her after the party at my SIL's place, changed her outfits and diapers and even attempted to get her to take her nap before the cake cutting. She also followed Zoe around the entire party while Zoe was walking wobbly around and made sure she didn't fall and hit herself. My FIL was the transportation manager. It was raining in the afternoon and he ferried us and loaded up our logistics to and fro, and carried all the boxes of decorations and gifts to wherever we wanted to place it at. And my SIL was also indispensable that day, she was the one who booked the function room for us and opened up her house a few days prior the party so that we could store our boxes of logistics. I love my in-laws so so so so much.

Another important person to thank would be my sister. All the shimmering backdrop, cake toppers and paper holders for the popcorn were all ordered by her. She also came extra early to help me put everything together and even stayed back to help me tear down the place when my entire family had gone back home. After ensuring that everything was properly packed and loaded, she then traveled back alone by two buses. Best sister ever.

We also want to thank Zoe's godparents - Daniel and Sihui. Like my sister, Sihui came extra early to help me to set up the dessert table. She was the one who climbed up the chair and hung that whole string of paper pompoms and also doubled up as our photographer. Daniel was the one who set up the speakers that day for the party, even the music playlist was put together by him with the latest hits that he specially chose. Both of them also helped us to tear down the place, packed everything for us and ensured that we had all the help we need.

Our good friends William and Ally touched us deeply too. In fact, as I typed this I was suddenly reminded that one year ago when Zoe and I were discharged from the hospital after her delivery, William was the one who offered and insisted to fetch us back home as we didn't have a car. He not only ferried us home but also carried all our gifts and baggage up to our door step and we were so moved by his act of kindness. Anyway, back to the party, on that day they couldn't make it for the afternoon session due to work commitments, but insisted to come and join us for the evening celebration. They stayed throughout the entire party and also helped us to tear down the place. Both William and Daniel were climbing up the chairs cleaning off the entire row of double-sided tape that was stuck stubbornly onto the glass window, and they also helped us carried all our logistics to my FIL's vehicle and made sure that everything in the function room was cleared before leaving together with us. How precious are these friends!

And of course, to the birthday girl and the incredible husband, I am so glad we had each other for the past 1 year. Thank you Zoe, for being our daughter whom we have the greatest privilege to parent and love. It has been so much joy watching you grow up in our family and hitting all that milestones. You have taught us so much about God's love and faithfulness in ways that we never have seen it before, and that is our greatest takeaway from parenting you. We hope you will always know that we love you and that you will always be our little baby. And to the husband, cheers to surviving our 1st year as parents! I don't think I would have enjoyed motherhood so much if not for your support in so many ways. Thank you for being the one who keeps track and stocks up Zoe's necessities - diapers, shampoo, diaper cream, soap cleanser, changing her teats promptly, cutting her nails, digging her ears, bathing her, cutting her hair, and constantly looking out at baby products to get the best deals or products that will make our life a little easier. Our lives would have fallen apart if not for you.

And, thank you Jesus for giving me this beautiful family. I have done nothing to deserve them, but You have been so gracious to bless me with them. I pray that You will always be the center of our family, and our children will always experience the love of God through our parenting.
